Grasping the Pencil Correctly: The Tripod Grip

Before we start, you will need:

A Groove pencil
A piece of paper or writing pad

Start by making a “gun” gesture
Allow pencil to rest on the bending middle finger and between the thumb and forefinger.
“Pincer” grip the pencil with thumb and forefinger
Allow the pencil to remain resting on the middle finger
The middle finger should curl slightly underneath the pencil to provide support.

Ensure both fingertips are about 1 inch away from the pencil lead tip – this allows your child to see his writing.

Tip: When you first start out, using thicker and shorter pencils i.e. Ferby will help your child learn to control the pencil better.
